Snowboarding Tricks Nose And Tail Rolls, Butters, And Front Side 180s

Submitted by: Andrea Robertson

For snowboarders new to learning tricks I suggest you get comfortable doing wheelies before attempting nose and tail rolls. A quick overview of performing a wheelie is, riding on one end of your board while balancing the other end in the air. Once you have master wheelies move on to nose and tail rolls.

A nose and tail roll is accomplished by spinning 180 degrees on either the nose or tail of the board and as a result switching your stance. This is a great trick to change your stance from regular to switch or vice versa. On an easy slope ride downhill at a slow to moderate speed. Bend your knees slightly and put your weight on your front foot. Lift your back foot making sure you tail is in the air. Use the nose of your board to pivot on and bring your back foot to the front, making a 180 degree turn. Keep your balance through the 180 degree turn while keeping the tail of the board in the air the entire time. Keep your shoulders and head facing downhill. Ride away smooth switch stance. With this trick you do not want to elevate your board too much or you will fall. Nose and tail rolls take the perfect amount of balance and timing to perform correctly. After you feel confident with this trick move on to butters.

A butter is a nose roll with a ground slide to complete a 360 degree turn. Begin on a moderate slope riding straight downhill. Bend your knees slightly shifting your weight to the front foot. Lift you tail in the air and pivot off the front of the board bringing your back foot to the front. But now let your shoulders and head follow your front foot so your head and shoulders are now facing uphill instead of downhill like in the nose roll. Put your nose down after the 180 degree turn. You are facing uphill. Continue the rotation by doing a ground slide, rotating your body and board to face downhill again completing the 360 degree turn. You never switch your stance on a basic butter. This trick can be done in a series to make it more interesting.

A frontside 180 involves turning your board 180 degrees in the air. Then landing and riding switch stance after the turn. This trick gets you familiar with the feel of moving in the air and doing aerial tricks. To start find an easy slope. Ride straight downhill at a moderate speed. Bend your knees slightly and shift your weight to your back foot. Lift your nose first, while twisting your hips and shoulders in the direction of the turn. Then lift your tail jumping and turning 180 degrees. Land both feet at the same time centered over the board to prevent from slipping out. Ride switch stance after the turn. Frontside 180s are the foundation of all aerial tricks. Master this trick and you will be prepared for more advanced aerials pushing you to the next level of snowboarding skills.
